L’Associazione LIFE AFTER OIL nasce a Sassari il 14 Febbraio 2014 e ha eletto sin da subito la Sardegna come sede del LIFE AFTER OIL International Film Festival con la prima edizione svoltasi a Martis, piccolo centro in provincia di Sassari in Sardegna ed è nata sotto la presidenza onoraria del regista Giuseppe Ferrara – autore di note opere di denuncia sociale e politica, scomparso il 25 Giugno 2016 a Roma. Ferrara aveva inaugurato a Martis (SS), il 9 Novembre 2013 la prima edizione del LIFE AFTER OIL International Film Festival. Con la Sardegna Ferrara aveva un rapporto profondo e significativo, nato all’epoca della realizzazione del documentario “Inchiesta a Perdasdefogu”. Il film, realizzato nel 1961, metteva in luce le conseguenze degli espropri in varie zone destinate a far parte di quello che oggi è il Poligono interforze sperimentale del Salto di Quirra. L’opera gli valse il premio “Nastro d’argento 1961″ per la migliore produzione.
Il Festival è ideato e diretto dal regista Massimiliano Mazzotta e rappresenta la naturale evoluzione del suo percorso professionale come autore di svariate opere cinematografiche e soprattutto delle due – ‘OIL’ e ‘OIL Secondo tempo’ – che lo hanno consacrato in Sardegna, in Italia e all’estero come uno dei più coraggiosi e significativi registi in ambito indipendente. ‘OIL’ è un documentario di 77’, realizzato fra il 2007 e il 2008, che indaga sull’impatto ambientale del polo petrolchimico di Sarroch (CA) e in particolare sulla Saras, la raffineria di petrolio fondata nei primi anni ‘60 dall’industriale milanese Angelo Moratti, industria a tutt’oggi operante. Nonostante si tratti di una realtà industriale presente nell’isola da oltre cinquant’anni, nessun regista o giornalista aveva mai realizzato un’inchiesta tanto approfondita, obiettiva e clamorosa sulle conseguenze dell’attività della Saras sul territorio e sulle popolazioni che vi risiedono.
Nel 2011 Massimiliano Mazzotta realizza ‘OIL Secondo tempo’, ancora un documentario incentrato sulle attività della famiglia Moratti, un proseguimento e approfondimento sul tema che è stato accompagnato dal libro di Antonio Caronia “L’Oro nero dei Moratti – Oil Secondo Tempo” edizioni Bepress. Oltre che sulle vicende della Saras, il film si concentra anche sulle connessioni tra la politica e le industrie inquinanti, sul rapporto tra calcio e petrolio, in una visione più generale degli interessi e delle strategie economico-finanziarie della famiglia di petrolieri
milanesi.
Il festival è stato ospitato dai seguenti comuni: Martis (2014, 2015); Stintino (2016); Santa Teresa Gallura (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020); Ottana (2019, 2020); Brindisi (2021); Villanovaforru (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025).

LIFE AFTER OIL Cultural Association
The LIFE AFTER OIL Association was founded in Sassari on February 14, 2014, and from the very beginning chose Sardinia as the home of the LIFE AFTER OIL International Film Festival. The first edition was held in Martis, a small town in the province of Sassari, Sardinia, under the honorary presidency of film director Giuseppe Ferrara — author of many well-known works of social and political denunciation — who passed away in Rome on June 25, 2016. Ferrara had inaugurated the first edition of the LIFE AFTER OIL International Film Festival in Martis (SS) on November 9, 2013. He had a deep and meaningful connection with Sardinia, which began during the making of his 1961 documentary Inchiesta a Perdasdefogu. The film exposed the consequences of land expropriations in several areas that would later become part of what is now the Salto di Quirra Interforce Experimental Range. The work earned him the Silver Ribbon Award (Nastro d’Argento) in 1961 for Best Production.
The Festival was conceived and is directed by filmmaker Massimiliano Mazzotta, representing the natural evolution of his professional career as the author of several films — particularly the two documentaries OIL and OIL – Second Half (OIL Secondo Tempo) — which established him in Sardinia, Italy, and abroad as one of the most courageous and significant independent filmmakers.
OIL is a 77-minute documentary made between 2007 and 2008 that investigates the environmental impact of the Sarroch petrochemical complex (Cagliari), focusing especially on Saras, the oil refinery founded in the early 1960s by Milanese industrialist Angelo Moratti, still in operation today. Despite being an industrial presence on the island for over fifty years, no filmmaker or journalist had ever conducted such a thorough, objective, and striking investigation into the effects of Saras’s activities on the surrounding territory and its inhabitants.
In 2011, Massimiliano Mazzotta produced OIL – Second Half, another documentary focusing on the activities of the Moratti family. It continues and deepens the investigation, accompanied by the book L’Oro nero dei Moratti – Oil Secondo Tempo by Antonio Caronia, published by Bepress. Beyond the Saras affair, the film explores the connections between politics and polluting industries, and the relationship between football and oil, offering a broader look at the economic and financial interests and strategies of the Milanese oil dynasty.
The festival has been hosted by the following municipalities:
Martis (2014, 2015); Stintino (2016); Santa Teresa Gallura (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020); Ottana (2019, 2020); Brindisi (2021); Villanovaforru (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025).
